How long-term collaboration has helped local management

The ATRC has been monitoring sites within the Great Southern Reef since the early 1990s. Acknowledging that generalised understanding of Marine Protected Area (MPA) effectiveness required long-term data from hundreds of MPAs worldwide was beyond logistical capabilities for local institutional research teams, Professor Edgar explored whether volunteer divers could expand the spatial scale of marine biodiversity data collection - and Reef Life Survey was born. Today RLS and the ATRC programs are completely compatible and data from the two programs are freely available online here
